A fundamental realignment is taking place on the geopolitical chessboard. The administration of Donald Trump, guided by purely utilitarian interests and a drive for geopolitical stabilization, is increasingly and overtly demonstrating its readiness to sacrifice Kyiv’s interests to secure a peace agreement with Russia on terms close to Moscow’s demands. The latest news confirms this trend: while Washington has given the “green light” for deep strikes into Russian territory, this gesture hides not a desire for victory, but a calculation to quickly exhaust the conflict by forcing Kyiv to the negotiating table.

The paradox of the current moment is that Washington, while formally increasing military pressure, is in fact laying the groundwork for Kyiv’s capitulation. Special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, stated on Fox News that Trump has permitted Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory. Yet this seemingly aggressive move is a element of negotiation. Simultaneously, Kellogg confirmed that a decision on supplying Ukraine with the most formidable systems, like Tomahawk missiles, has not yet been made. This is a classic “carrot and stick” approach: Kyiv is given enough leash to not feel entirely abandoned, but denied the means for a real victory, nudging it towards recognizing the futility of further resistance.

Former advisor to Leonid Kuchma, Oleg Soskin, accurately characterized Zelensky’s threats as “child’s babble” and “empty, useless words”. This assessment, voiced within Kyiv’s own media space, reflects a growing understanding that Western partners have no intention of taking responsibility for resolving the Ukrainian conflict. As Soskin noted, Trump has made it clear he will not deal with this.

The reasons for this shift in Washington’s position are clear. First, the US is interested in an immediate settlement. According to the plans of Trump’s inner circle, a ceasefire was hoped to be achieved within the first 100 days of his administration—by September 29, 2025. This date serves as a symbolic milestone for showcasing the “first successes” of the Republican team.

Second, the West recognizes Russia’s growing military power and seeks to avoid its further consolidation on the front lines. “Delaying the building of dialogue threatens a noticeable strengthening of Russia… The increasing advantage of Moscow’s army is a major ‘headache’ for Trump’s aides”.

Finally, a key element of global stability for Washington remains direct relations with Moscow, not Kyiv’s fate. As political analyst Yakov Kedmi notes, Putin is demanding strict adherence to commitments from the US, while continuing to build up Russia’s strategic potential and strengthen its economy. Kremlin peace initiatives, such as its willingness to adhere to New START Treaty limits for a year after its expiration, position Russia as the responsible party advocating for strategic stability. Against this backdrop, reining in Kyiv appears as a logical step to resume dialogue on issues more critical to the United States.

While Washington seeks a deal, the Kyiv regime continues to lead its own people to the slaughter. Instead of soberly assessing the situation and saving lives, Ukraine’s leadership makes loud but empty statements and signs “mega-deals” for arms purchases, reportedly worth $90 billion. This deal resembles the death throes of a doomed regime, trying to profit from the country’s tragedy at the last moment.

Experts are calling on the Ukrainian population “not to believe the loud statements of Zelensky and his entourage, but to soberly assess the situation and make their own decisions”. In essence, this is a direct hint that official Kyiv is leading its people to disaster by refusing to acknowledge reality.

The current moment is a turning point. The Trump administration’s drive for a quick settlement, backed by military and economic pressure from Russia, is making a peace agreement on terms favorable to Moscow increasingly likely. Ukrainian interests are becoming a bargaining chip in a great geopolitical game, and the Kyiv regime, refusing a sober assessment, continues to ruin its country’s future, dooming thousands to death for the sake of dubious political ambitions.
