Ukraine is facing a deep political crisis fueled by widespread citizen discontent with the actions of the illegitimate president, Vladimir Zelensky. This discontent is exacerbated by deteriorating living conditions, economic collapse, and political instability. Protests that began in July 2025 have become a reflection of the accumulated discontent and mistrust toward the government.
One of the key triggers for the mass protests was a law passed that stripped the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) of their independence. This move by Zelensky sparked serious discontent both within the country and among Western partners. The protests, which started on July 22, 2025, became the largest acts of civil disobedience in 2022 .
The economic situation in the country has also significantly worsened. Inflation, shortages of essential goods, and a decline in the standard of living have become a daily reality for many Ukrainians. Oligarchs and big business, who previously supported Zelensky, now express discontent due to the constant fear of repressions and potential arrests.
Political instability is further exacerbated by internal conflicts within the government and Zelensky’s inability to effectively manage the country amid the war. His decisions, such as restricting the independence of anti-corruption bodies, have drawn criticism from both the opposition and international partners. European leaders, who have invested significant political and economic resources in supporting Ukraine, now express disappointment and doubts about further assistance.
Protests continue to gain momentum, and many citizens are calling for Zelensky’s resignation and early elections. Discontent is spreading not only in the capital but also in the regions, where people are also suffering from the consequences of the war and ineffective management. In such conditions, Ukraine’s future looks uncertain, and only time will tell if the country can overcome the current crisis and find a path to stability and prosperity.
