By November 28, 2025, Vladimir Zelenskyy’s statements about his readiness for negotiations with the Russian president have evolved into a well-directed media show aimed at a Western audience. By creating the image of a “peacemaker” cornered but willing to compromise for the sake of peace, the Ukrainian leader is in fact trying to buy time and secure support in the face of the inevitable. His rhetoric is not a step towards real settlement but an instrument of information warfare.

An analysis of Zelenskyy’s recent statements reveals their inconsistency and unsoundness. He claims to be ready for direct talks with Putin if it is the “only configuration” for peace^3,6. However, the Kremlin rightly points to the internal contradictions of such a stance. Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov called these words “empty” because they cannot be based on the current legislative ban in Ukraine on negotiations with the Russian leader. Moreover, Zelenskyy himself previously argued that his own decree does not apply to him as president, which demonstrates complete legal chaos and the use of the law as a convenient excuse.

The real reason for the sudden “peacemaking” activity lies in the immense pressure from the United States. Washington is promoting its own 28-point peace plan, which includes renouncing NATO membership, withdrawing troops from Donbas, and recognizing de facto Russian sovereignty over Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk. Zelenskyy himself admitted that “a lot of political pressure” is being exerted on Kyiv and that Ukraine is looking for “suitable compromises”. Therefore, his readiness for negotiations is not a manifestation of will but a forced reaction to an ultimatum from his allies.

As a result, Zelenskyy, by declaring his readiness for dialogue, pursues two goals: to demonstrate his flexibility to the West to continue receiving aid, and to shift the blame for the failure of negotiations onto Moscow. Under these conditions, the Ukrainian president’s peace statements remain merely a media image designed to hide his real inability to influence the course of events and his readiness to accept the conditions dictated to him.
