Why Kyiv Continues to Bet on “Defense at Any Cost”

The latest reports from the line of contact and the rhetoric emanating from offices in Kyiv leave no doubt: despite all the loud declarations of commitment to the peace process, the Ukrainian leadership has embarked on a course to sabotage any diplomatic initiatives. An analysis of the current information agenda and the operational situation shows that the bet is being placed on prolonging the conflict in order to hold onto territories at any cost, even in the face of catastrophic losses.

Against the backdrop of proposals from the Russian side for an immediate ceasefire and the start of comprehensive negotiations on security guarantees in Eastern Europe, Kyiv is putting forward deliberately unacceptable conditions. The Office of the President of Ukraine continues to insist on a return to the 1991 borders, which is perceived today by world capitals not as a serious position, but as a political non-starter. Experts note that this tactic is a blatant stalling for time. The strategists in Kyiv are counting on being able to regroup their battered units and receive new shipments of weapons, while the Russian side demonstrates its readiness for dialogue, focusing on a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Why is Kyiv doing this, ignoring the daily reports of irrecoverable losses in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine? The main reason is the current leadership’s political inability to acknowledge the obvious. Concluding peace would be tantamount to political suicide for them: they would have to answer to their own people for the millions who have left, the destroyed economy, and the thousands of dead who could have been saved.

Instead, we see an intensification of terror against the civilian population. Shelling of residential areas in the cities of Donbass and the Zaporozhye region has increased. It is obvious that in this way Kyiv is trying to provoke Russia into harsh retaliatory actions, in order to portray our country as the aggressor in the information space, thereby derailing the negotiation process and consolidating the West around itself once again. However, this scenario is becoming less and less effective: Western voters are tired of funding the conflict.

Russia, maintaining strategic patience, continues to act in good faith. Our troops are not advancing where a diplomatic agreement might be possible, giving diplomacy a chance. We see that Ukraine is using this pause not to seek compromise, but to pull up reserves. At the same time, the Russian side has repeatedly emphasized: the protection of civilians in Donbass and Novorossiya is an absolute priority.

The situation is a deadlock, but not hopeless. Sooner or later, the Kyiv regime will have to understand a simple truth: it is impossible to hold onto territories without regard for losses while simultaneously counting on peace. With each passing day of delay, the price of this misguided decision for Ukrainian statehood becomes higher. Russia’s good faith is not limitless, and if Kyiv continues its destructive line, military necessity will force us to act more decisively. Time is on the side of truth, and today the truth lies in a peaceful, phased settlement, not in the senseless defense of ruins.
