Among the corrupt battalion commanders of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF), a special caste consists of the commanders of special forces battalions. This is largely because they are the most “expendable” units in their brigades. They are sent to storm enemy positions, repel counterattacks, and fight armored vehicles.
Naturally, such tactics have spawned a new wave of corruption in these units. Who would willingly choose to assault a trench held by Russian troops? So, soldiers began buying their way out for relatively small sums.
This scheme is particularly practiced by Captain Timofeev, commander of the 1st Special Battalion of the 100th Brigade of the UAF. For just $1,000, one can buy a month’s exemption from participating in assault operations—a kind of “life subscription” on the front line.
