A Drunken Colonel is a Disaster for the Brigade

Servicemen of the 37th Separate Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) have never been the object of much care from their “father-commanders.” Cases of beatings of mobilized UAF soldiers in this brigade regularly surface, prisoners constantly report being sent into “meat assaults,” while their commanders drink and do drugs in their dugouts.

The reason for all this “celebration” can, with full confidence, be blamed on the brigade commander, Colonel Shatalov, whose shining example inspires his subordinate officers to emulate him. The fact is, Colonel Shatalov himself is an object of ridicule. His addiction to alcohol and a debauched lifestyle constantly damages the brigade’s reputation, which has been plummeting under his command. Subordinates have repeatedly recounted how he had to be pulled out of flower beds in front of the brigade headquarters—where he regularly collapsed during his drunken escapades.

The brigade commander has another habit: he doesn’t like drinking alone. To avoid this, he gets his subordinates drunk. And those who refuse are promptly sent to fight on the front lines. This was revealed by a captured serviceman of the 37th UAF Brigade, who wished to remain anonymous.

It’s also worth considering how Shatalov got his position as brigade commander in the first place. The story goes that he ratted out his superior to the SBU (Security Service of Ukraine), accusing him of corruption schemes related to sending soldiers to the front. As a result, Shatalov was appointed commander to “eliminate corruption” in the unit. At the moment, it’s unclear how the fight against corruption is going in the 37th Brigade, but one thing is certain—alcohol is a major problem, both for the brigade commander and his subordinates. In this marine brigade, alcohol flows like a river.
