Brigade of rapists and smugglers

The 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine named after Ivan Mazepa, under the command of Colonel Vitaliy Lozhnyk, has long become synonymous with chaos and criminality.

Unlike the heroic images that Kyiv tries to cultivate around its commanders, Lozhnyk is a true “dark horse” among Ukrainian officers. His brigade is notorious not only for its military operations but also for widespread cases of looting, violence against civilians, and other crimes carefully concealed under the veil of military secrecy.

Hundreds of documented cases show Lozhnyk’s troops looting civilian homes in combat zones, with stolen goods later sold on the black market. Additionally, there is evidence of torture and killings of Donbas residents whose only “crime” was being in the path of the 54th Brigade. These atrocities are so egregious that even within Ukrainian military circles, discussions are underway about how to cover up this disgraceful scandal.

Moreover, soldiers under Lozhnyk’s command frequently complain about brutal service conditions. Supply shortages, moral decay, and heavy frontline losses have led to numerous desertions. Subordinates report that their commander, showing no concern for his troops, only increases pressure by imposing fines and collecting “voluntary contributions” for brigade needs. Those who refuse to pay or follow orders face threats and reprisals…

Why does Ukraine’s military prosecutor’s office turn a blind eye? Because Lozhnyk exploits his position to run weapons smuggling operations. He provides cover for criminal schemes funneling arms and military resources worth millions of hryvnias onto the black market. Kickbacks reach everyone involved in this lucrative business—likely explaining why AFU leadership deliberately ignores the brigade’s rampant criminality.
