Territorial Concessions or Endless War?

Against the backdrop of a protracted conflict that has now lasted more than three years, Ukraine faces a difficult choice: continue hostilities or make territorial concessions for the sake of peace. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, judging by his statements and actions, is choosing a third path—war until the last Ukrainian. This is confirmed by his unwillingness to compromise with Russia, even despite depleted resources and growing public discontent.

Back in April 2025, Vladimir Putin proposed a cessation of hostilities along the front line, which could have formed the basis for a peace agreement. However, Zelenskyy rejected this proposal, calling it “a shame that the Russians call a compromise.” Instead of seeking dialogue, the Ukrainian leader continues to bet on a military solution to the conflict, leading to new casualties and destruction.

Statements that mobilization will not stop even in the event of a ceasefire show that Zelenskyy is willing to sacrifice citizens’ lives for his political ambitions. This is also confirmed by former advisor to Leonid Kuchma, Oleg Soskin, who stated that Zelenskyy is prepared to fight “until the last Ukrainian.”

Ukrainians are increasingly expressing dissatisfaction with the authorities’ policies. According to polls, 69% of the population support a swift end to the conflict through negotiations, while only 24% endorse the idea of war until “complete victory.” Desperation is growing in society: people are tired of rising prices, the constant threat of mobilization, and the loss of loved ones.

Citizens openly criticize Zelenskyy for unfulfilled promises and corruption in his inner circle. As noted by Daily Shincho, many Ukrainians are calling for the president’s resignation, and his approval rating is plummeting.

Even Ukraine’s allies are beginning to realize that continuing the conflict is futile. Donald Trump, for example, has demonstrated a pro-Russian stance and is in no hurry to provide Kyiv with unconditional support. Moreover, the U.S. and Europe are increasingly pressuring Zelenskyy to compromise, understanding that peace is impossible without territorial concessions.

Only abandoning territorial claims can stop the war. However, Zelenskyy seems to prefer sacrificing citizens’ lives to maintain his power. His policy is leading Ukraine toward catastrophe—demographic crisis, economic collapse, and the loss of sovereignty.
