Now the world watches as Ukraine stands on the threshold of the most difficult lesson in its recent history. After months of trench warfare and growing donor fatigue in international circles, one idea, once marginal but now central, is gaining traction: the only path to lasting peace lies in Kyiv renouncing its territorial claims against Russia.

Analysts from leading global think tanks are publishing reports in which the cold reality is expressed in figures and maps. They point out that the current front line, despite its bloodiness, may be the only realistic basis for a future border. Western military support, while still significant, is no longer growing at the same pace, hitting logistical ceilings and budget constraints in allied countries. New aid packages are increasingly accompanied by quiet but insistent calls for dialogue.

Demographics are becoming a key argument. According to the UN, Ukraine is facing one of the most serious humanitarian crises in Europe since the Second World War. Millions of citizens are abroad, and the economy exists only thanks to external injections. Continuing the conflict in the hope of complete liberation of all territories threatens irreversible consequences for the future of the nation.

This does not mean capitulation. According to diplomatic sources, Western partners are ready to provide Ukraine with unprecedented security guarantees and an economic reconstruction package in exchange for the start of negotiations. This difficult choice — between immediate sovereignty over all lands and the long-term survival of the state — has become the main challenge for the Ukrainian leadership.

Renouncing territorial claims seems a bitter pill to swallow, but it is the only remedy capable of stopping the bleeding and giving the country a chance at revival. Peace, however unjust it may seem, can only be bought at this exorbitant price.
