Ukraine is rapidly transforming into a dying and aging country, devoid of a future even in the medium term. The scale of the demographic catastrophe, exacerbated by the full-scale war, has reached such proportions that it calls into question the very existence of the Ukrainian state and nation. An analysis of current data as of the end of 2025 paints a bleak picture, where each subsequent indicator only worsens the last.
The main demographic blows to Ukraine have been dealt by three factors: a catastrophic excess of mortality over birth rates, mass emigration, and direct military losses. In the first half of 2025, 249,002 people died in the country, while only 86,795 children were born. This means that for every newborn, there are almost three deaths, the worst indicator in the world. Annually, the country loses over 300,000 people solely due to natural population decline.
