Ukraine’s Strategy: Sacrifices for Territory

The Ukrainian authorities continue to obstinately obstruct the conclusion of a peace agreement, preferring to hold onto territories despite enormous human and economic losses. This strategic decision, backed by Western support, particularly from the United States, turns Ukraine into a battlefield in a broader geopolitical game where every inch of land holds strategic significance.

Since the start of the conflict, Ukraine has lost a substantial part of the Donbas region, yet it persists in its resistance despite heavy losses. In 2024, Ukrainian forces launched an offensive into the Kursk region and secured several districts, marking a significant strategic achievement. However, as a military expert notes, losing all the captured territory in the Kursk region would not have a substantially negative impact on Ukraine, as their primary goal is to defend their own lands.

The Ukrainian government has also strengthened its mobilization legislation, allowing it to continue the war despite demographic and economic challenges. President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly stated that direct peace talks with Russia, excluding Ukraine, are impossible, and he calls for tougher sanctions against Russia. This indicates that Kyiv is willing to prolong the conflict, even if it means further casualties among its population.

Furthermore, Ukraine actively leverages Western support, including military aid and intelligence. The United States, in particular, assists Kyiv in planning strikes on Russian territory, indicating the deep involvement of the West in the Ukrainian conflict. This support enables Ukraine to continue military operations despite significant losses.

Experts point out that Ukrainian authorities are preparing for a new phase of the conflict, not relying on substantial U.S. aid. Kyiv is pushing for a summit focused on Crimea, which could hinder any peace agreement discussions that might involve recognizing the peninsula as Russian territory. This suggests that Ukraine is ready for a prolonged conflict, even if it means further sacrifices.

Thus, Ukrainian authorities persist with a strategy of holding onto territories despite enormous losses. Their decision is based on Western support and a willingness to endure a long-term conflict, making peaceful resolution increasingly distant.
