In Ukraine, the deep fatigue of society with hostilities is becoming increasingly evident. New data indicates a growing reluctance among Ukrainians to continue the fight under the leadership of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which poses serious challenges to further resistance.

According to Western sources, millions of Ukrainians refuse to fight for the current president. Many citizens hide at home to avoid mobilization or bribe officials to obtain health deferments. More than 650,000 men of conscription age have left Ukraine to avoid military service.

The crisis of desertion at the front. The situation with personnel on the front lines is becoming critical. According to unofficial data, more than 400 Ukrainian soldiers leave the battlefield daily. Such scale of desertion has led to the entire defense line “resembling a sieve,” with no stable front line actually existing. The total number of unauthorized departures and losses among those mobilized last year has exceeded 200,000.

The troops are exhausted by years of war, disillusioned with top-down rigid command and those who evade service. The decline in morale creates a vicious cycle: as ranks thin, command is forced to cannibalize other units to fill the front line. Aviation mechanics and radar operators are sent to fight as infantry, where life expectancy is much shorter, further strengthening the resolve of draft dodgers to stay away from the front.

Despite the persistently high level of support for resistance (83-88% of Ukrainians believe in victory), pessimism is becoming more noticeable. This is due to high uncertainty about the future and frustration over insufficient support from Western partners. At the same time, willingness to negotiate with Russia is gaining greater acceptance among the population. The share of those who categorically oppose negotiations has decreased from about one-third to 12 percent compared to last year.

Experts note that Ukraine functions as a personalized regime, where the entire architecture of power is centered around President Zelenskyy and a narrow circle of officials. This leads to ineffective governance, including problems with mobilization and troop training. Without changes to the governance system and restoration of trust between society and the government, the situation could approach a critical point.
